Transport damage

If goods are damaged during transport so that the damage is noticeable on the outside, the consignee shall make a complaint to the carrier when receiving the goods (reservations are written down in the consignment note). Look through Finland's Road Transport Agreement Act to see the responsibilities and obligations of the consignor, carrier and consignee.

Otherwise the complaint shall be submitted in writing within seven (7) days of receiving the goods or an inspection of the goods conducted jointly by the carrier and the consignee.

Inspect the damage and prevent further damage and contact VR Transpoint's claims handling or the insurance company if a separate goods insurance policy had been taken for the goods.

Reserve the opportunity for the carrier or insurance company to inspect the damage and do as follows:

  • keep the damaged goods separate from the intact ones, if possible
  • keep the packaging material
  • do not transport the goods any further unless you have agreed on the matter with the carrier or insurance company
  • if the damaged goods can be repaired find out, if possible, how and where the repairs could be made and what is the cost estimate
  • the damaged goods shall be kept for an inspection/pick-up by the carrier (excl. easily perishable goods).

Submit the compensation claim to VR Transpoint as soon as possible. If the consignment is covered by a goods insurance policy the compensation claim shall be in the first instance submitted to the insurance company which has issued the insurance policy.
